A caribou trapped in freezing sea ice off Port au Choix, Newfoundland, was rescued by two fishermen after falling into the icy water and struggling to escape. The animal was submerged up to its head and appeared exhausted, but the fishermen used their boat to break the ice and guide the caribou safely back to shore.
Eyewitness Brandon Gould noted that while caribou typically swim or walk across the ice depending on the season, this one fell through shortly after the ice had formed. Although it might have survived on its own, exhaustion would likely have been fatal. Fortunately, the rescued caribou appeared healthy after reaching land.
