Herat Wins Inaugural Maryland Million Classic, Launching a New Tradition

The inaugural Maryland Million Classic, held at Laurel Park in 1986, marked the beginning of a cherished tradition celebrating Maryland’s horse racing and breeding industry. Herat, a son of the legendary Northern Dancer and Maryland’s greatest sire, won the $200,000 race with a commanding performance, finishing just shy of the track record. Despite being owned, trained, and ridden by connections from outside Maryland, Herat’s pedigree made him a fitting first champion, helping to establish the Maryland Million as a significant event.

Conceived by ABC sportscaster Jim McKay to honor Maryland’s thriving breeding scene, the event attracted over 20,000 fans, blending the excitement of a major sporting event with state pride. Herat’s victory not only highlighted his impressive career but also symbolized the launch of a new institution that continues to define Maryland’s Day at the Races.
