Heat Wave Challenges Livestock Care at McLean County Fair

At the McLean County Fair in Bloomington, Illinois, extreme heat on Wednesday posed challenges for both livestock and their owners. To combat the oppressive temperatures, exhibitors employed several cooling methods, including running large fans in the barns, hosing down animals like cows, sheep, and horses, and providing water throughout the day. These efforts aimed to keep the animals comfortable and prevent heat-related distress.

Jack Dameron, a fair exhibitor, emphasized the importance of keeping animals standing and cool by using fans, water, and wash racks to help lower their body temperatures. Despite starting events earlier at 7 a.m. to avoid the worst heat, the heat wave persisted throughout the day. The fair, known as the biggest 4-H show in the world, will continue until July 27, concluding activities at 7 p.m.
