Heart of the Turf: Racing’s Black Pioneers Exhibit Highlights Contributions of Black Horsemen and Women

The “Heart of the Turf: Racing’s Black Pioneers” traveling exhibit, launched by the Keeneland Library in 2023, highlights the significant contributions of Black horsemen and women to Thoroughbred horse breeding, raising, and racing. Featuring over 100 photographs, commissioned artwork, artifacts, and video interviews, the exhibit honors more than 125 stories of Black pioneers in the racing industry. It has toured numerous prestigious museums and community venues nationwide, engaging over 200,000 visitors from across the U.S. and 35 countries. The exhibit is currently on display at On Top of the World communities in Ocala through August and will travel to the Marion County Black History Museum in September and the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association venues in October.

Supported by the Keeneland Association, Kentucky Historical Society, and local organizations, the exhibit also includes educational programming such as a planned reception with local racing figures. The project was spearheaded by Keeneland Library director Roda Ferraro, who researched the historic role of Lexington’s East End as a hub for Black entrepreneurs in the Thoroughbred industry. This initiative not only preserves the legacy of Black pioneers in horse racing but also fosters community engagement and education through partnerships with local museums and educational programs.
