Centaur Stride, a program dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities through equestrian activities, has faced challenges in recruiting and retaining teen volunteers despite support from the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation and the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. To engage youth, Centaur Stride launched a Drill Team program in 2021, offering riding lessons and horsemanship training culminating in a demonstration event. This initiative aimed to foster a lasting connection between teens and the horses, encouraging ongoing volunteerism.
One success story is Maleri Kelsey, who joined through the Drill Team, continued volunteering, and eventually became a part-time employee. Inspired by her experiences and mentorship at Centaur Stride, Maleri has been accepted to Alfred University’s Class of 2030 and their Equestrian Center as a Saxon Western Recruit, pursuing a career working with horses. Centaur Stride continues to rely on community support and upcoming fundraisers like Glow Bingo to sustain its mission.
