Hawthorne Racecourse, known as The Thorne, is a stark contrast to the picturesque Arlington Park, situated in a less appealing industrial area of southwest suburban Stickney. The track offers a bleak view of oil refineries and a massive sewage treatment plant, and its facilities have deteriorated significantly, with the grandstand removed and bettors confined to a small room near the finish line.
Currently, Hawthorne operates only two days a week, Thursdays and Sundays, featuring Thoroughbred races that often have just six horses, the minimum needed to maintain profitable betting. The overall atmosphere is far from enjoyable, with limited amenities like a concession stand serving basic food items, reflecting the track’s decline and the dissatisfaction of its patrons.
