Haughhead Bridge Reopens for Walkers, Wheelers, and Cyclists, But Not Horse Riders: Safety Concerns Remain

Haughhead Bridge near Innerleithen has reopened for walkers, wheelers, and cyclists after functional repairs, but remains closed to horse riders due to safety concerns. The closure has forced riders from Haughhead Stables to use a dangerous narrow single-track road.

Stables owner Ann Philip expressed concerns about the safety of pony trekkers on the alternative route, citing the lack of space for cars to pass at a safe distance. The Scottish Borders Council has been urged to fund a proper repair of the bridge to allow it to be used by horses and riders once again.

The local authority has stated that they will explore funding opportunities for a full repair of the bridge and have made upgrades to road markings and speed limit signage in the area to ensure the safety of horse riders on surrounding roads.
