Hastings Racecourse Ends Thoroughbred Racing After More Than a Century

Hastings Racecourse, a historic Thoroughbred horse racing venue since 1892, has announced it will cease all horse racing operations immediately. This decision comes after the British Columbia government declared that the horse racing industry will lose its share of slot machine revenue by January 31, 2026, cutting an essential $9 million annual funding source. The provincial review highlighted the industry’s financial unsustainability and the government’s limited capacity to provide further support amid fiscal constraints.

Despite the end of racing, the casino and simulcast racebook at Hastings will continue operating. Great Canadian Entertainment emphasized that the closure was a difficult but necessary business decision and expressed gratitude to the community and racing participants. The company plans to support affected employees and stakeholders during the transition, while rumors persist about potential redevelopment of the site, possibly for a new Vancouver Whitecaps soccer stadium.
