“Harvey’s Law,” a bill proposed in Minnesota, aims to mandate the installation of cameras in infant and toddler rooms at state-funded daycares to increase transparency and accountability. This legislation follows the tragic death of 11-month-old Harvey Muklebust at a Savage daycare, where an employee was charged with second-degree murder. Harvey’s parents are advocating for the bill to prevent similar incidents and have garnered support through an online petition.
State Rep. Nolan West, who has previously championed similar measures, is collaborating with Harvey’s parents to introduce the bill despite past legislative hurdles related to costs and footage storage concerns. West’s commitment to child safety is deeply personal, stemming from his daughter’s experience with abuse at another childcare facility. The bill’s hearing is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the Capitol.
