Hairdressing Voucher Leads to Life-Saving Breast Cancer Diagnosis for Susan Falconer

Susan Falconer’s decision to get a mammogram while redeeming a hairdressing voucher last Christmas led to an early breast cancer diagnosis, which she credits with saving her life. After surgery in June, she is now focusing on organizing the Poniworks and Mainstay Farm Summer Olympics, a grassroots equestrian event inspired by a similar fundraiser in Central Hawke’s Bay. The event, set for December 20 on her farm, aims to raise funds for the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust and support women undergoing breast cancer treatment by providing vouchers for services like cleaning and gardening.

Ms. Falconer emphasizes the event’s relaxed, inclusive atmosphere, encouraging children and community members to participate in fun competitions without pressure. Motivated by her own experience and a desire to remain positive, she hopes the Summer Olympics will become an annual tradition, benefiting different charities each year and fostering community spirit in East Otago.
