Hairdressing Voucher Leads to Life-Saving Breast Cancer Diagnosis for Susan Falconer

Susan Falconer, a Palmerston horsewoman in her early 50s, discovered she had breast cancer after a routine mammogram encouraged during a visit to redeem a hairdressing voucher. Previously focused on managing high blood pressure, she had never had a mammogram before. Diagnosed in April, she underwent surgery in June and is now recovering well. Motivated by her experience, Susan is organizing the Poniworks and Mainstay Farm Summer Olympics, a grassroots equestrian event on her farm, aimed at raising funds for the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust and support services for women undergoing breast cancer treatment.

Inspired by a similar event in Central Hawke’s Bay, the Summer Olympics will be a fun, inclusive day encouraging community participation, with competitions designed to be lighthearted and accessible. Fundraising will come from weekly auctions leading up to the event, with proceeds helping local charities and providing practical support like cleaning or gardening vouchers for women in treatment. Susan emphasizes positivity and resilience, hoping to inspire others, especially children, to face challenges with a smile and a positive attitude.
