Susan Falconer, a Palmerston horsewoman in her early 50s, discovered she had breast cancer after deciding to have a mammogram while redeeming a hairdressing voucher last Christmas. Previously focused on managing high blood pressure, she had never had a mammogram before. Diagnosed in April, she underwent surgery in June and is now recovering well. Inspired by her experience, Susan is organizing the Poniworks and Mainstay Farm Summer Olympics, a grassroots equestrian event on her farm, aimed at raising funds for the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust and supporting women with breast cancer.
The event, modeled after a similar Winter Olympics fundraiser started by friends in Central Hawke’s Bay, emphasizes fun and community involvement rather than competition. It will feature informal competitions and auctions to raise money for local charities, including providing practical support like cleaning or gardening help for women undergoing cancer treatment. Susan hopes the event will become an annual tradition, fostering positivity and resilience in the community while supporting important causes close to her heart.
