GVMC to Float Fresh Tenders for Controversial Horse-Riding Training Centre Near Mudasarlova Park

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has decided to reissue tenders for a proposed horse-riding training centre near Mudasarlova park after cancelling the initial project due to flaws and irregularities. Originally initiated in early 2024 by the previous YSRCP administration with an estimated cost of Rs 6 crore, the project faced opposition and was halted by the new TDP-led council. Concerns included financial discrepancies, lack of formal approvals, and the misuse of a valuable 2.7-acre public asset. The council plans to recover Rs 3 crore already paid and conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter.

The revised plan emphasizes that operators will invest their own capital, manage operations independently, and pay a lease to the state government without involving public funds. Mayor P Srinivasa Rao clarified that the earlier tender was flawed because the GVMC was to bear recurring expenses while the operator paid minimal fees. The new tender aims to develop the park accessibly and sustainably. However, environmental concerns remain, with opposition from CPM leaders and environmentalists warning against construction in the water catchment area due to potential groundwater depletion and ecological risks.
