The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has decided to reissue tenders for a proposed horse-riding training centre near Mudasarlova park after canceling the original project initiated in early 2024 by the previous YSRCP administration. The initial Rs 6 crore project faced criticism for financial irregularities, lack of visible progress despite Rs 3 crore spent, and flawed policies that placed undue financial burden on GVMC while offering minimal lease revenue. Following a council meeting in December 2024, the project was officially scrapped, with plans to recover advances and conduct a multi-party inquiry. The new approach requires operators to invest their own capital, manage operations independently, and pay lease fees to the state government without public funding involvement.
While the mayor emphasized that the fresh tender aims to develop the park accessibly and efficiently, opposition voices raised environmental concerns about construction in a water catchment area, warning of potential groundwater depletion and ecological risks. The project, situated on valuable public land near Mudasarlova park, remains contentious, balancing urban development goals with financial prudence and environmental sustainability.
