Guyana’s General Election: Three-Party Race Amidst Oil Boom and Economic Growth

Guyana is holding a general election featuring a competitive race among three main parties: the incumbent People’s Progressive Party (PPP) led by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) headed by Aubrey Norton, and the newly formed We Invest In Nationhood (WIIN) party. The PPP emphasizes its experience and leadership in guiding Guyana toward a prosperous future, especially amid the country’s rapid economic growth fueled by its burgeoning oil industry, with ExxonMobil as a key player. The World Bank highlights Guyana as the fastest-growing economy globally, with an average GDP growth of around 15% annually over the past six years.

The APNU criticizes the PPP for corruption, nepotism, and mismanagement of oil revenues, pledging to restore law, order, and equitable wealth distribution. Meanwhile, the WIIN party, established just three months ago, seeks to disrupt the traditional ethnic-based political divide between the Indo-dominated PPP and Afro-dominated APNU by appealing to younger and first-time voters across ethnic lines. This election marks a significant moment as Guyana navigates its newfound oil wealth and economic transformation.
