Gujarat Inaugurates Three-Day Kathiawadi-Marwadi Horse Festival in Wankaner

The three-day Kama Ashwa Show, a Kathiawadi–Marwadi horse exhibition and sports festival, was inaugurated in Wankaner, Morbi district, by Gujarat’s Minister for Animal Husbandry, Jitu Vaghani. Organized by the state Animal Husbandry Department and the Kathiawadi Horse Breeders Association, the event honors former Wankaner ruler and environmentalist Digvijaysinh Zala, who started the show in 1994. The festival celebrates Gujarat’s equine heritage, especially the Kathiawadi horse breed, known for its bravery and calm temperament, and includes competitions with over 250 horses qualifying to participate after veterinary checks.

Minister Vaghani emphasized the government’s commitment to conserving indigenous horse breeds, announcing plans for a new breeding center and mission-mode efforts to increase horse populations. The event featured displays by the Rajkot Police Mounted Unit and a best horse decoration competition. Other dignitaries highlighted the cultural and historical significance of horses in India, linking them to warrior traditions and regional pride. The festival also saw the release of a book on horses, drawing large attendance from public representatives, officials, breeders, and citizens.
