Grimsby Horse Riders Campaign for Safer Passing in Annual Pass Wide and Slow Event

Horse riders in the Grimsby area are organizing the annual “Pass Wide and Slow” group ride to raise awareness about the dangers posed by reckless driving near horses. Last year, 58 horses were killed by road traffic in the region, prompting riders to advocate for safer overtaking practices. The event, part of a global campaign, will take place on September 13, starting at Grove Farm Liveries in New Waltham, with a five-mile route open to riders, dog walkers, and cyclists. Organizers emphasize that horses, being flight animals, become anxious and unsafe when drivers pass too closely or quickly, a problem exacerbated by increased traffic from new housing developments and limited off-road bridleways.

The campaign urges motorists to follow The Highway Code’s advice to slow down to 10 mph and allow at least two meters of space when passing horses, requesting just a few seconds’ patience to ensure safety for all road users. Local MP Martin Vickers and driving schools are supporting the event, which requires participants to wear high-visibility clothing and have insurance. With over 200 similar rides planned across the UK and internationally, the initiative highlights the need for mutual respect and caution on roads shared by horses and vehicles.
