Grand National-winning jockey Graham Lee and international equestrian Saffron Cresswell, despite coming from different horse riding disciplines, both suffered life-changing spinal injuries from falls—Graham was paralysed from the neck down in November 2023, and six months later Saffron was paralysed from the chest down after a fall at Bramham Horse Trials. Both will attend the Northern Raceday for Spinal Research at Wetherby Racecourse on October 15, 2025, to raise awareness and funds for the UK charity dedicated to spinal cord injury research.
Graham, who achieved notable successes including winning the Grand National and Gold Cup, expressed gratitude for the hope Spinal Research has given him and his family. Saffron, who broke her back and damaged her spinal cord, shared her determination to find new purpose despite her injury. The annual event, now in its 35th year, has raised over £800,000 for the charity and features a champagne reception, lunch, auctions, and guest speakers including Olympic gold medalist Ros Canter. Tickets are available online for this important fundraising day.
