Governor Sam, a Grade 1-placed turf sprinter owned by Bregman Family Racing and Swinbank stable and trained by George Weaver, captured the Grade 3 Quick Call Stakes at Saratoga with a commanding 3 1/2-length victory. The 3-year-old bay colt, who had a strong juvenile season including a third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, showed maturity and versatility by stalking the pace before unleashing a decisive late run under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. This marked his first win as a sophomore after a couple of off-the-board efforts earlier in the year.
Trainer George Weaver praised Governor Sam’s development, noting the colt’s increased strength and ability to race from off the pace, which bodes well for future races. Plans are being considered to run him next in the Grade 3 Mahony Stakes at Saratoga, with an eye toward eventually competing in the Breeders’ Cup against older horses. Governor Sam, a $275,000 purchase at the 2024 Ocala Breeders’ Sales, has now earned $96,250 from this win and holds a record of 9 starts with 5 wins and 2 thirds.
