Governor Jim Pillen to be Discharged from Hospital After Horse-Riding Accident

Gov. Jim Pillen will be discharged from the hospital on Friday after being injured in a horse-riding accident and undergoing surgery at Nebraska Medicine. The Governor suffered a laceration to his spleen, a minor laceration on his kidney, and a minor fracture on his vertebrae, but doctors said he was the ideal patient and should be able to attend the first day of the new legislative session.

Pillen was taken to a hospital in Columbus on Sunday after being bucked off a horse, and was transferred to Nebraska Medicine the same day. He underwent minimally invasive surgery to treat his injuries, including stabilizing his left sided rib fractures with nine titanium plates. Despite being very uncomfortable and struggling with breathing, doctors said he was recovering well and should be able to continue his recovery at home.

The surgery on Wednesday to stabilize Pillen’s ribs lasted three hours, and doctors said he will need to take it easy at home but should be able to attend the legislative session. The Governor’s injuries included broken ribs, but doctors are optimistic about his recovery and progress.
