Government Launches Donkey Farming Scheme with Subsidies to Boost Livestock Breeding

The Donkey Farming Scheme under the National Livestock Mission encourages farmers, entrepreneurs, and groups such as self-help and cooperatives to establish breeding farms for donkeys, horses, and camels. The central government offers financial assistance through subsidized loans of up to Rs. 50 lakh, with a 50% subsidy on the loan amount, to promote livestock farming and create sustainable business opportunities. The scheme requires breeding centers to maintain a minimum number of indigenous animals—at least 50 female and 5 male donkeys—to qualify for support, aiming to preserve native breeds.

This initiative is part of broader government efforts to strengthen the livestock sector and diversify rural livelihoods by supplementing agricultural income with livestock breeding ventures. By providing financial incentives and clear guidelines, the scheme seeks to attract new entrepreneurs and farmer groups to invest in livestock production, thereby expanding agricultural income sources and supporting rural economic development.
