Google has reversed its earlier pause on real-money gaming (RMG) expansion in Brazil, now allowing gambling apps on the Google Play Store as long as operators are licensed under Brazil’s national regulatory framework overseen by the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA). This decision follows Brazil’s formal launch of its regulated betting market six months ago and aligns with Google’s global approach to RMG, which emphasizes compliance with local regulations and user protections. Gambling apps in Brazil will be categorized into lotteries, horse racing, betting tips, and daily fantasy sports, with all developers and advertisers required to obtain SPA licenses to appear on Google Play or use Google Ads.
Unlike India’s fragmented regulatory environment, Brazil’s unified national licensing enables a more structured rollout of gambling apps on Android, though iOS users in Brazil remain restricted due to Apple’s unchanged policies. Google’s move reflects a broader global trend where the expansion of real-money gaming access is increasingly contingent on strong regulatory oversight, supporting legal operators while aiming to protect users and curb illegal gambling activities.
