German Equestrian Federation Introduces Horse-Friendly Changes to Young Horse Training and Competitions

The German equestrian federation is implementing significant changes to the training and competition of young horses, aiming to promote more age-appropriate and horse-friendly practices. Following a recent young horse summit involving breeders, riders, trainers, vets, and judges, the federation announced modifications to the Bundeschampionate championships. Key changes include reducing the number of ridden tests for three-year-olds, eliminating the in-hand conformation test in favor of a single overall impression score, and introducing a novice-level dressage test for four-year-olds ridden by their regular riders. These adjustments emphasize the horses’ relaxation, rhythm, and responsiveness, while also reducing their time spent in competition arenas to enhance welfare.

The federation has also made venue layout changes to allow horses visual contact with each other and plans further reforms, including adjustments to prize-giving ceremonies. An interdisciplinary working group has been established to review young horse training comprehensively. These initiatives reflect a broader shift in the equestrian world towards prioritizing horse welfare and social acceptance of the sport. Experts like Katy Holder-Vale have praised the reforms as positive steps, noting a growing global awareness of welfare issues and the need for competition formats that reduce pressure on young horses.
