Gentildonna, Two-Time Japan Horse of the Year, Dies at 16

Gentildonna, a two-time Japan Horse of the Year and exceptional broodmare, has died at age 16. The daughter of Deep Impact and Donna Blini made history by sweeping Japan’s Filly Triple Crown in 2012 and winning the Japan Cup twice consecutively in 2012 and 2013, becoming the first horse to do so. She also claimed victories in prestigious races like the Dubai Sheema Classic and Arima Kinen in 2014, earning her second Horse of the Year title. Over her career, Gentildonna earned over $18 million and was inducted into the Japan Racing Association Hall of Fame in 2016.

After retiring from racing with a record of 10 wins, 4 seconds, and 1 third from 19 starts, Gentildonna had a successful broodmare career, producing notable offspring including Geraldina, winner of the 2022 Queen Elizabeth II Cup and Sankei Sho All Comers. Trainer Sei Ishizaka expressed deep sadness at her passing, reflecting on her strength and special place in racing history. Gentildonna was retired from broodmare duties in July before her death.
