GBGB Criticizes Welsh Greyhound Racing Ban Bill as “Deeply Flawed” Amid Cross-Party Concerns

The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) has strongly criticized the Welsh Senedd’s proposed Prohibition of Greyhound Racing (Wales) Bill, calling the legislation “deeply flawed” and accusing ministers of ignoring warnings from cross-party committees about the lack of evidence, economic impact assessment, and rushed process. GBGB CEO Mark Bird warned that the Bill, which would criminalize greyhound racing in Wales, risks setting a dangerous precedent for other animal-related activities and represents poor governance that disregards public, economic, and animal welfare priorities. The GBGB plans to continue opposing the Bill through further scrutiny stages and judicial review.

Supporters of the Bill, including animal welfare groups forming the Cut the Chase Coalition, argue that greyhound racing inherently endangers dogs and that public opinion favors banning the sport to protect animal welfare. Tens of thousands signed a petition backing the ban, and proponents see Wales as poised to lead the UK in outlawing greyhound racing. The Senedd’s Stage One approval means the Bill will undergo detailed examination and possible amendments, with the debate highlighting tensions between ethical concerns, legislative rigor, and evidence-based policymaking as the future of greyhound racing in Wales remains uncertain.
