Spendthrift Farm’s Further Ado emerged as a leading contender for the May 2 Kentucky Derby after an impressive 11-length victory in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. Trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., Further Ado dominated the 1 1/8-mile race with a time of 1:49.58, the fastest Blue Grass since 2021. This win earned him 100 Kentucky Derby qualifying points, bringing his total to 135, solidifying his spot in the Derby field. Further Ado, a Gun Runner colt bred by John Oxley, has also won at Churchill Downs, including the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last fall, showcasing his versatility and strong potential for the Triple Crown.
Despite the setback of another Spendthrift favorite, Ted Noffey, who was sidelined with bone bruising, Further Ado’s commanding performance has renewed excitement for the farm’s Derby hopes. While jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. has yet to decide between Further Ado and another top mount, Renegade, the colt’s dominant Blue Grass win positions him as a serious Derby threat. Further Ado’s victory not only boosts his racing credentials but also enhances his future value as a stallion, aligning with Spendthrift’s long-term breeding goals.
