From Small Breeders to Derby Dreams: The Inspiring Journey of Westbrook Stables

Todd and Angie Lewis of Westbrook Stables started breeding Thoroughbreds in 2016 and have since become the breeders of a champion female sprinter and Breeders’ Cup winner in Soul of an Angel, with two homebreds on the Kentucky Derby trail. California Burrito, a 3-year-old colt by Army Mule, won the Battaglia Stakes at Turfway Park to earn points on the road to the Kentucky Derby.

The Lewises have seen significant success in breeding, with Soul of an Angel being sold for $2.6 million and California Burrito and Baby Max both showing promise on the Derby trail. The Lewises have worked hard to achieve this success, with Todd Lewis doing all the matings himself and the family being involved in the process.

The Lewises’ story is a family affair, with their daughter helping foal the horses and the family being present for Soul of an Angel’s Breeders’ Cup win. Despite being on a budget, Westbrook Stables has found success in breeding and racing, with hopes of seeing their homebreds compete in the Kentucky Derby.
