Maverick, a severely malnourished Andalusian horse rescued from neglect in Cabazon, Riverside County, has made a remarkable recovery and now serves as a member of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Mounted Enforcement Detail. Found emaciated with painful injuries from lack of body fat, Maverick was among dozens of animals seized from a property after repeated welfare complaints and the owner’s failure to provide adequate care. After extensive veterinary treatment and a carefully managed diet, Maverick was adopted by Deputy Bryan Hubbard, who trained him for the specialized mounted unit that conducts patrols and search-and-rescue missions.
Deputy Hubbard, a seasoned rancher and law enforcement officer, saw potential in Maverick despite his poor condition and dedicated months to his rehabilitation. Maverick successfully passed the rigorous Mounted Enforcement Detail qualification test and now works alongside Hubbard, providing valuable service in diverse environments such as riverbeds, shopping centers, and mountainous areas. Their partnership highlights the transformative power of care and training, turning a once near-death horse into a vital member of the sheriff’s department and a symbol of hope and resilience.
