From Maine Farm to Mongol Derby: Kelsy Stromski’s Journey to the World’s Longest Horse Race

Kelsy Stromski, raised on a farm in northern Maine, has always embraced challenges and an active outdoor lifestyle, from working on her family’s farm to competing in biathlons and pursuing a passion for horses. After studying art and design and founding her own studio in Massachusetts, she now prepares to compete in the Mongol Derby, the world’s longest horse race spanning over 600 miles across the Mongolian steppe. Accepted as one of only a dozen riders for the 2026 race, Stromski is undergoing rigorous training in Mongolia to build the endurance and skills needed to ride semi-wild horses and navigate the demanding course.

The Mongol Derby is a physically and mentally grueling event that retraces Genghis Khan’s ancient postal route, requiring riders to cover more than 50 miles daily and change horses frequently. Stromski embraces the race as a personal rite of passage inspired by the Japanese concept of Misogi, which encourages undertaking a transformative challenge each year. While excited and motivated, she faces the practical hurdle of raising $20,000 to cover entry fees, horse care, and travel expenses. Stromski views the derby as a thrilling test of endurance and self-trust that will push her limits and invigorate her spirit.
