Fresh Probe Ordered into Negligence Charges Against Owner of Emaciated Maidan Horse

The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Calcutta has ordered a fresh investigation into allegations of negligence and cruelty against Md Firoz, the owner of an emaciated horse found drawing a carriage in the Maidan area. The case, initiated after the horse was spotted severely malnourished in February 2023, was initially closed by the Hastings Police Station, which exonerated the owner. However, an animal rights group, Cape Foundation, challenged the probe, citing a shoddy investigation that failed to record key witness statements, including those of the complainant and a veterinarian.

After reviewing the petition, the CJM directed the Hastings Police to conduct a more thorough inquiry, noting that the original investigation omitted critical aspects necessary to uncover the truth. The court emphasized the need to record statements from all relevant parties, including the complainant Radhika Bose and vet Mukesha Kini, who had examined the horse, to ensure justice and proper accountability for the alleged animal cruelty.
