The Fort Worth Stockyards has recently intensified enforcement of rules regarding horseback riding in its historic district, with riders being threatened with fines of $250 per horse for standing on sidewalks or stopping in the street. Longtime riders like Cody Montes, who have traditionally enjoyed bringing their horses into the Stockyards to soak in the cowboy culture, expressed frustration and concern that these measures could undermine the area’s Western heritage and tourism appeal. Montes shared her experience of being confronted by multiple security guards and highlighted the impact of the crackdown through a viral TikTok post.
In response, the Stockyards Heritage Development Co. clarified that no new policies have been introduced, but rather existing city guidelines are being more strictly enforced to ensure safety amid increased foot traffic. These guidelines treat horses similarly to bicycles, requiring riders to follow traffic rules and avoid sidewalks. While the company emphasizes safety and coordination with public officials, some community members feel the stricter enforcement threatens the traditional cowboy culture that is central to Fort Worth’s identity and tourism.
