Fort Worth Riding Club Preserves Legacy and Culture of Black Cowboys

Circle L 5, based in east Fort Worth, is one of Texas’s oldest Black riding clubs, dedicated to preserving the legacy and culture of Black cowboys. Founded in 1951 by Ed “Pop” Landers and others who initially formed the Silver Saddles in 1949, the club evolved to become more than just a riding team—it is now a nonprofit organization with over 90 members that fosters community, participates in rodeos and parades, and supports local events. The club practices on land owned by longtime supporter Minnie Strawther and serves as an extended family for many members, including youth like 16-year-old Lois Scott, who dreams of becoming an equine veterinarian.

The club challenges the stereotypical image of cowboys by highlighting the rich history and ongoing presence of Black cowboys in American culture. Members like Jarred Howard II and Lesa Ellinger emphasize the importance of education and representation, encouraging anyone interested to join and learn to ride. Circle L 5 not only keeps the tradition alive through competitions like the Texas Black Invitational rodeo but also provides a supportive community that honors the contributions of Black cowboys since emancipation.
