In Clark County, Indiana, firefighters from the Monroe Township Fire Department responded to an unusual rescue call involving a horse trapped in a frozen pond. Upon arrival, the horse was found stuck shoulder-deep in ice about 20-30 feet from shore. The team secured the horse with ropes and enlisted help from the Charlestown Fire Department, whose firefighters donned ice rescue suits to enter the icy water and assist in guiding the horse safely back to shore.
Monroe Township Battalion Chief Jared Phillips noted that while rescuing large animals can be challenging due to their size and fear, teamwork and patience are crucial. This rescue was not their first involving a horse, as they had previously saved one stuck in a muddy pond. Despite the cold conditions, the horse was unharmed and safely returned to its owners, highlighting the fire department’s role as versatile first responders ready to handle a wide range of emergencies beyond just fires.
