Showjumpers from Guernsey and Jersey are struggling to participate in each other’s equestrian events due to conflicting ferry schedules operated by DFDS and Brittany Ferries. British Showjumping Guernsey reported no entries from Jersey at its Horse of the Year Show, while British Showjumping Jersey faced a similar lack of Guernsey participants at its Liberation Show earlier in the year. Organizers attribute these difficulties to the ferry companies running cross-island services on different days, increasing costs and logistical challenges for competitors.
Representatives from both islands expressed frustration, describing the situation as the negative fallout from competition between the ferry operators. DFDS acknowledged the issue, noting low passenger numbers on certain routes and indicating that cross-island services are under review. They emphasized the need for a collective approach to improve connectivity between the Channel Islands to better support local activities and events.
