FEI Proposes Optional Double Bridles at CDI3* Dressage Competitions in 2026 Rule Changes

The FEI has proposed making double bridles optional at international CDI3 dressage competitions starting in 2026, allowing riders to choose between a snaffle or double bridle up to this level. This marks a progression from the current rules where double bridles are optional only up to CDI2. The change aims to gather data and evaluate rider and official preferences, while the FEI maintains that double bridles do not pose a welfare issue at the top level. Additionally, there is consideration to ban double bridles for juniors at junior events from 2027.

Other proposed changes include introducing “paperless judging” to enhance transparency by making electronic judges’ sheets available post-competition unless riders opt for privacy, and adding movements to big tour tests that emphasize suppleness and self-carriage to promote horse welfare. These proposals are under consultation, with national federations invited to provide feedback by August 26, 2025, before a final draft is voted on at the FEI General Assembly in November.
