FEI Proposes Key Rule Changes for LA28 Olympic Equestrian Competitions

The FEI Sports Forum in Lausanne reviewed proposed rule changes for the LA2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, focusing on pre-competition and discipline-specific adjustments. Key pre-competition changes include allowing unlimited athlete/horse combination substitutions up to two hours before the first event, provided they are on the Nominated Entries List, with stricter substitution rules during competition limited to medical or veterinary reasons. Additionally, all athlete–horse combinations must share the same nationality by January 17, 2028. In eventing, penalties for rider substitutions during competition are set to increase, and teams may face full disqualification if a member is disqualified for doping violations, while jumpers and dressage are considering changes to medal determination and elimination processes.

The forum’s discussions will continue to cover Para dressage, veterinary issues, and welfare and safety data. Meanwhile, several US eventing competitions are closing or opening entries, offering opportunities for athletes to participate in upcoming events. The article also highlights sponsor content on equine gut health and a training tip emphasizing the principle of “Pressure and Release” in animal training.
