Feather River College Equine Studies Program: Training the Next Generation of Horse Professionals

The Feather River College Equine Studies program in Quincy, California, has nearly 60 horses on campus that students work with to prepare for careers in working with, breeding, and training horses. Head Equine Instructor Susannah Campbell, an FRC alumni, focuses on training young and older horses, as well as teaching equitation classes to students.

The horses in the program are primarily bred on campus, with a goal of having 25 foals every spring. Students care for the horses as part of their curriculum, working with specific foals throughout their three-year stay at FRC. The program offers classes for every stage of a horse’s life, from weaning to carrying riders, emphasizing the importance of reading a horse’s behavior.

Graduates of the equine program at FRC go on to work in various equine-related jobs, with hands-on experience being a key focus of the program. The classes are open to everyone, with Campbell recommending starting with Western Equitation I. The equine studies program is part of the larger agriculture department at Feather River College, which includes other programs such as rodeo, ranch management, beef science, and agriculture business.
