Federal agents conducted a large-scale raid on October 19 at La Catedral arena, a horse racing facility in Wilder, Idaho, arresting four individuals as part of an ongoing investigation into an illegal gambling operation. The operation involved about 200 law enforcement personnel from federal, state, and local agencies, including the FBI, ICE, Idaho State Police, Canyon County Sheriff’s Office, and DEA. The raid occurred during a public horse racing event, and ICE reportedly detained around 50 people. The investigation began in February following a tip about gambling activities at the venue, which is owned by Ivan Tellez, who along with three others, faces federal charges related to running an illegal gambling business.
The FBI alleges that Tellez made substantial cash deposits linked to race days, totaling approximately $100,000, and that others assisted in managing wagers and race organization. If convicted, Tellez could face up to five years in prison, fines, and supervised release. The case highlights concerns about illegal gambling’s connection to increased violent crime and drug activity, with law enforcement emphasizing the importance of multi-agency collaboration to protect communities. Meanwhile, detainees are being processed by ICE, with some undocumented individuals reportedly released and others potentially transferred to detention centers across the country.
