FBI Director Details Arrests in Illegal Gambling Investigation Amid North Carolina’s Legal Sports Betting Expansion

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest of over 30 individuals, including Billups and Rozier, in connection with an illegal gambling investigation. In North Carolina, sports betting on professional and college sports became legal in 2024, with online platforms like DraftKings operating legally. However, other forms of gambling such as slot machines, video poker, and betting on races remain illegal and can result in Class 2 misdemeanor charges, fines up to $1,000, and jail time up to 60 days.

North Carolina hosts three tribal casinos on sovereign land, including two owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and one by the Catawba Nation. Legal sports betting is restricted to professional and college sports, excluding high school sports, with a minimum betting age of 21. The state’s online sportsbooks are projected to generate significant revenue, while many other states still prohibit sports betting entirely.
