Farm Owner Jailed and Banned for Life After Rescue of Over 450 Neglected Animals

A farm owner, Lee Hayes, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison and given a lifetime ban on keeping animals after over 450 animals, including horses, donkeys, dogs, and exotic species, were found in appalling conditions at his farm in Nottinghamshire. The large-scale rescue operation in November 2023, led by the RSPCA and supported by eight major animal charities, uncovered severe neglect such as overcrowded, unsanitary housing and untreated health issues. Several animals had to be euthanised due to their poor condition, while others are receiving ongoing care and rehabilitation.

Hayes admitted to 25 offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, with the court noting his failure to improve conditions despite prior warnings. His girlfriend, Tammy Heath, also pleaded guilty to animal welfare offences and received a suspended sentence and a five-year ban on keeping dogs. The Donkey Sanctuary and other charities continue to care for the rescued animals, seeking new homes for many while providing lifelong sanctuary for those with chronic health problems. Authorities urge owners struggling to care for animals to seek help early to prevent similar suffering.
