Katy Mellor, an experienced equestrian, is using her skills to create resources promoting long distance riding in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. With a grant from the Shropshire Hills Farming in Protected Landscapes Programme, she is researching, mapping, and promoting over 40 circular routes in the area to encourage more people to explore the countryside on horseback.
Mellor’s Pathfinder Project aims to provide opportunities for people to enjoy the Shropshire Hills National Landscape while preserving the local bridleways network for the future. She has dedicated her research to five main areas in Shropshire, creating circular routes ranging from five to 15 miles over varying terrains to accommodate all abilities of horse and rider.
Mellor has faced challenges such as fallen trees, floods, and overgrown tracks while exploring the routes with her horses. She has worked closely with organizations like the Long Mynd and District Bridleways Association and Shropshire Council to ensure the routes are safe and accessible for riders. The routes are available on the OS Maps app and through the LMDBA website, with the goal of inspiring others to explore the Shropshire countryside on horseback.
