Davinia Johnson’s Exmoor Stowbrook Red Kite has made an inspiring comeback after a serious illness that left his riding future uncertain. Eighteen months ago, Kite showed signs of colic, leading to a diagnosis of dangerously high creatine levels and a week in intensive care. Despite initial fears that he might never be ridden again, Kite’s health improved, allowing him to return to light work and ultimately compete again.
This season, Kite has excelled, winning the open ridden Exmoor, Dartmoor, and Shetland class at the Royal International Horse Show and securing a second Hickstead pass at BSPS Area 5. Davinia describes this period as “bonus season number two,” emphasizing the joy of each outing after their challenging journey. Kite’s impressive track record includes multiple qualifications for prestigious events and numerous wins at major shows.
Davinia cherishes her time with Kite, who has been a beloved companion for nearly nine years. She highlights his playful personality and love for attention, stating they are focused on enjoying their time together without setting strict future plans. Despite being labeled a “medical mystery” by vets, Kite remains a cherished part of Davinia’s life, embodying resilience and joy.
