North Carolina event rider Andrew McConnon has been suspended for 20 months by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) for horse abuse, with the ban effective from January 8, 2025, through September 8, 2026. The FEI tribunal found McConnon guilty of abusing horses and conduct damaging to the sport, violating FEI regulations and the Code of Conduct on the Welfare of the Horse. He is prohibited from competing, training, or participating in any FEI or national federation activities and fined approximately $3,100. The investigation began after former grooms reported abusive behavior in May 2024, supported by videos and photos, with additional footage surfacing publicly after a September competition.
Several of McConnon’s horses have since been transferred to new riders, including Tamie Smith, who publicly addressed the horses’ poor condition upon arrival and their recovery under her care. Smith criticized the FEI’s handling of the case, calling the suspension too lenient and the investigative process insufficient, noting the lack of interviews with key individuals and absence of mandated education or reform for McConnon. She emphasized the need for accountability and education to prevent abuse in the sport. McConnon has 21 days to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
