Equine Virus Outbreak Forces Precautions and Changes at Las Vegas National Finals Rodeo

The 2025 Wrangler National Finals rodeo in Las Vegas has been significantly impacted by an outbreak of equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1), a contagious virus that can cause respiratory illness and neurological damage in horses. Due to rising cases across multiple states, strict health precautions were implemented, including daily temperature checks, isolation protocols for sick horses, and entry permits requiring veterinary certification. Many riders were unable to bring their horses, and those who did had to follow stringent measures such as keeping horses isolated and disinfecting equipment to prevent virus spread. Some rodeo events were canceled or relocated, and horse hotels reported decreased profits due to fewer participating horses.

Organizers at the Thomas & Mack Center and South Point Hotel & Casino, key venues for the rodeo, enforced additional restrictions like limiting stable access, erecting barriers between stalls, and sanitizing facilities regularly. Horses were required to remain on-site throughout the event to minimize exposure, and quarantine areas were prepared for any sick animals. Despite these challenges, participants like Taylor Lawson took extra precautions during travel and at the event to protect their horses. The collective efforts aimed to safeguard the health of thousands of horses and preserve the tradition of the rodeo amid the viral outbreak.
