Equine Virus Outbreak Forces Precautions and Changes at Las Vegas National Finals Rodeo

The 2025 Wrangler National Finals rodeo in Las Vegas has been significantly impacted by an outbreak of equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1), a contagious virus that can cause respiratory illness and severe neurological problems in horses. Due to rising cases across several states, strict health protocols were implemented, including daily temperature checks, isolation of sick horses, and restrictions on horse movement and interaction. Many riders were unable to bring their own horses, and traditional rodeo ceremonies were altered, with riders entering on foot rather than horseback. The outbreak has also led to canceled events and reduced participation, affecting local businesses like horse hotels.

To mitigate the spread, Nevada requires entry permits and veterinary inspections for all horses entering the state, while rodeo venues have enforced additional measures such as stable quarantines, limited access to stables, and enhanced sanitation practices. Despite these efforts, the virus has caused concern among horse owners, prompting some to avoid the event altogether or take extreme precautions during travel. While no cases have been reported in Nevada, the outbreak has underscored the importance of vigilance and biosecurity in protecting equine health during large gatherings.
