Equine Herpesvirus Outbreak Spreads in Arizona with Fourth Confirmed Case

A multi-state outbreak of equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) is spreading in Arizona, with the state’s Department of Agriculture confirming a fourth case, the first showing neurological symptoms. The outbreak, traced back to events in Texas and Oklahoma, has led to increased monitoring, movement restrictions, and cancellations of horse events like the Desert Classic Horse Show to prevent further spread. EHV-1 affects horses’ respiratory and nervous systems, can be fatal, and spreads easily through contact and contaminated surfaces.

Local horse rescues such as Good Shepherd Horse Rescue are enforcing strict biosecurity protocols, including frequent cleaning, individual grooming kits, and quarantining new arrivals to protect their horses. Volunteers are trained to monitor horses closely for symptoms like runny noses or fever. The outbreak has heightened awareness among horse owners and veterinarians, emphasizing vigilance and preventive measures to keep horses safe during this ongoing health threat.
