The upcoming Pennsylvania Farm Show, a highly anticipated event, may see fewer horses this year due to an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) affecting local farms. The virus, which has two main strains—EHV 1 causing neurological issues and EHV 4 causing flu-like symptoms in horses—has prompted some participants, like the Pennsylvania High School rodeo Association, to withdraw as a precaution. Farmers are advised to consult veterinarians and follow professional guidelines to protect their animals.
While there is no risk of EHV transmission to humans, attendees are encouraged to practice good hygiene, such as hand sanitizing, especially when interacting with multiple horses from different farms. Organizers emphasize following specific rules in different sections of the show to help prevent the virus’s spread and ensure a safe experience for both horses and visitors.
