Equine Herpesvirus Outbreak Raises Concerns Ahead of 2026 Pennsylvania Farm Show

Concerns over the spread of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1), including its deadly neurological form EHM, are impacting horse events ahead of the 2026 Pennsylvania Farm Show. The virus, which spreads through air droplets, direct contact, and shared equipment, has caused cancellations of several horse shows in Pennsylvania and other states like Texas and Arizona. Horse owners and trainers, such as Danielle Gervasi of Legato Farm, are taking strict biosecurity measures including temperature monitoring, isolation of exposed horses, and avoiding cross-contact to prevent transmission.

In response, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has implemented a temporary quarantine order requiring additional veterinary documentation for horses entering the state and maintains strict biosecurity protocols at the Farm Show. While recent cases in Pennsylvania are reportedly nearing resolution, organizers and participants remain cautious, with some horse owners hesitant to attend due to the risk of infection. The Farm Show continues to enforce veterinary inspections and may impose further requirements to safeguard equine health during the event.
