A major qualifying event for the San Antonio Stock Show & rodeo, the Uvalde rodeo Qualifier, was canceled due to an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), which has already caused several horse deaths. Organizers, including the San Antonio Stock Show & rodeo, WPRA, and PRCA, prioritized animal safety by canceling the event despite no infected horses attending. The qualifier typically allows contestants to compete for spots in the San Antonio rodeo, and organizers are currently assessing how the cancellation will impact the contestant field for the main event in February.
The EHV-1 outbreak is believed to be linked to a recent large rodeo event in Waco, with the virus spreading easily among horses through direct contact and contaminated equipment or handlers. The virus can cause respiratory illness and severe neurological disease, sometimes resulting in death or neonatal loss in pregnant mares. Preventative measures include isolating sick horses and thorough handwashing. Despite the cancellation, officials expect no issues for the San Antonio rodeo in February but will continue monitoring the situation closely.
