Equestrian Sports in Nebraska: Opportunities, Teams, and the Love of Horses

Equestrian sports hold a significant place in Nebraska’s agricultural culture, with the horse industry valued at $40 billion and supporting around 180,000 horses. These sports, divided mainly into Western and English disciplines, offer opportunities for all ages to participate through programs like 4-H, Future Farmers of America (FFA), and Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) teams. Youth programs such as 4-H and FFA provide structured learning and competition experiences, while high school and college teams, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Equestrian Team, allow riders to continue competing, often using leased or donated horses. Despite rising costs, these programs make equestrian sports more accessible by reducing the financial burden compared to owning a horse.

Beyond competition, equestrian involvement teaches valuable life skills such as resilience, patience, adaptability, and teamwork, as riders must communicate and collaborate with horses who do not share their language. Coaches and participants emphasize the importance of the horse-human partnership and the care required to maintain the health and well-being of these animal athletes. Riding lessons and training barns also provide avenues for Nebraskans to engage with horses, fostering a community that values both the sport and the animals themselves.
